Steve Carell has come out and told Esquire US he doesn’t believe the show would work in 2018.
“Because The Office is on Netflix and replaying, a lot more people have seen it recently,” he explained.
“And I think because of that there’s been a resurgence in interest in the show, and talk about bringing it back. But apart from the fact that I just don’t think that’s a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago.
“The climate’s different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behaviour. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded.”
“I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today – which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”
When you think about it, Micheal Scott would not survive this current political climate, take for example the episode where Micheal Scott accidentally send nude photos of his boss Jan to everyone in the office by e-mail. It’s a funny episode but if that episode was to be released for the first time during the #metoo movement it would have a completely different reception.
Or take for example the episode where Micheal tells everyone in the office about Oscar’s homosexuality, and then to make amends forcefully kisses him.
In a world where people can’t take humor at face value, this show would never work, Micheal Scott is funny because he is so unaware of his actions and to some extent we love him for it because we know he doesn’t know better. In 2018 Micheal Scott would be forced to know better, every episode would have to end with Micheal learning an important lesson about how to behave in a politically correct world.
